The Community Garden up and running

Another spring is almost gone. The garden looks great. In spite of the rain, vegetables are planted and the flowers look great. Master Gardeners and garden volunteers have been working furiously. Tom Boas expanded the fence so that the berries have more room to grow and the area is easier to enter with the tiller. Fayco has been helping out with volunteers from the workshop and the County jail continues it's successful partnership with the garden. All produce grown in the garden is donated to county food pantries. Anyone interested in helping at the community garden, please contact us at 283-2753. No time for gardening? Donations are also accepted to defray costs associated with the garden. Thanks to all who make this community project a great success. In times like these when money is tight, it is nice to know there is local food available for those in our county that need a helping hand.

Little Community Garden & VCC

Fayette County Master Gardeners have teamed up with Vandalia Correctional Center to feed the hungry in Fayette County. Work has already started at the Vandalia Little Community Garden. VCC work-camp inmates cleared debris yesterday so that soil preparation and planting can begin. The rain did not deter garden volunteers or inmates. More work will continue today at the Garden. In addition to help at the Vandalia site, the Lake Land Community College Horticulture Center located at the Correctional Center will donate produce from their plot to area food pantries.

Last year, Master Gardeners and Little Community Garden Volunteers donated almost 4000 pounds of food to area food pantries. With the help of VCC we hope to triple that amount this year and serve more communities in Fayette County. Stay tuned for more progress.
