Changes in our society often require communities to begin developing strategies to improve their social, economic and cultural well-being. This effort to stimulate community development usually results in identifying community leaders, improving channels of communication, and assessing local needs and improved problem solving skills. Local University of Illinois Extension Educator Gary Letterly works with communities to develop adequate and meaningful needs assessment tools. Another program called "Community Swap" provides opportunities for towns and villages to learn more about what works and doesn't work in communities of all sizes. Through the Community Swap program, the Extension Educator coordinates a team of community leaders to visit and inspect the other host town to gain a first hand account and to gather detailed information on infrastructure, services, opportunities and a sense of community attitude.
