Christian County Illinois is a rural community located southeast of Springfield with a population of over 35,000 people and over 6,500 students enrolled in the public and private schools. Many Christian County adults and youth don't have a clear understanding of the vast role agriculture plays in their daily lives, so the Agriculture Literacy Program is designed to educate teachers, students and adults by offering curriculum kits to teachers, hosting educational workshops, sponsoring community events and by presenting public and classroom workshops. The four main objectives of the Christian County Agricultural Literacy Program are as follows: 1.Implement a comprehensive agricultural curriculum for grades K-8 2.Promote the agriculture industry as a career option. 3.Promote a network of agricultural resources of educators. 4.Increase public awareness of agriculture as a viable industry. Since February 2004, The Christian County Agricultural Literacy Program has impacted over 8,200 students in grades K-8.
