Extension helps individuals make better food choices, handle food safely,
adopt healthy lifestyles and strengthen communication within their families.
2,900 individuals with limited resources participated each month in the
Family Nutrition Program. More than 560 programs were presented at community
sites including public housing centers, day care facilities and senior citizen
centers during the year.
A courtyard garden maintained by Extension Master Gardeners provided
a comfortable and relaxing setting for visitors to talk with loved ones
at the Champaign County Nursing Home. The garden design and plantings
were based on research designs specifically for people with Alzheimers
disease or related disorders.
Headstart parents, children, and teachers received nutrition and food
safety education.
High school students received sports nutrition education to better understand
healthy eating in relation to body composition and exercise.

250 young people participated in Walk In My Shoes, a simulation to help
youth understand the aging process, including hearing and vision loss,
and other conditions affecting older people.
Adults received information on planning long-term care for their parents
and loved ones. Help was given to midlife family members to cope with
the stress of caregiving for elderly loved ones.
