New Cloverbud curriculum for 2009-10

This year Cloverbuds will have several new curriculums to experience.

Cloverbud: Exploring Farm Animals; Vegetable Gardening A—See Them Sprout and Helper's Guide: and Veterinary Science 1—From Airedales to Zebras and Helper's Guide.

Cloverbuds can turn in records too! The sheets are available in either Extension office.

For more information contact Judy Benz, 4-H community worker at 618-576-2293 or 648-498-2913

or email benz@illinois.edu

A New 4-H Year Begins

4-H enrollment for new and returning members will begin September 1, 2009. Youth must be 8 years old by September 1, 2009 or be in the third grade to join a regular 4-H club. If you have younger siblings or friends between the ages of
5-7, they can join a Cloverbud club.

4-H members may enroll in as many project areas as they have interest; however, it is recommended that first year members enroll in only one or two projects. Your parents and your 4-H leaders will help you as you choose areas of interest, set goals, and work on projects.

Remember, if you wish to continue in a project area from one year to the next, you must sign up for that project from one year to the next. In order to exhibit a 4-H project at the fair, you MUST be enrolled in the project by the enrollment deadline.

Steps in Choosing 4-H Projects

· Review the Illinois Clover

· Eliminate projects which don't interest you.

· Consider how much time you have for projects.

· Sign up for projects according to your age and skills.

· Don't enroll in a project that is too advanced.

· Make sure you have someone to help you with your projects.

These steps may help to make the project decision easier.

4-H is an organization that has no limitations, so try new projects, advance on old projects, but most of all HAVE FUN.

4-H Shooting Sports

In the months to come, Illinois 4-H will be adding Shooting Sports to the lineup of projects and activities.

Local adults interested in learning more about 4-H Shooting Sports or who are willing to be involved in sponsoring or assisting with forming a club should call the extension office. Calhoun-Jersey Counties will need adults to train as coordinators of this program. The trainings are Oct. 23-25 in Monticello or Nov. 6-8 in Sparta.

Please call the office if you have interest in volunteering to help with archery, shotgun or rifle (air and .22).

National 4-H Week October 4-11

Displays should be in place by Sunday, Oct. 4 and remain through Saturday October 10. Here are some window display tips.

· Make sure the theme is followed

· Have a message

· Display should draw and hold attention

· Display should sell 4-H.

· Display should be pleasing in appearance and proportion

· Include the club name, leaders names, and members names.

· Include theme: "Celebrate 4-H".

Judging will take place on Monday, October 5.

Contact the Extension office and let us know where to look for your club's window display.

One last request...

One last request….When selecting projects, please mark clearly whether you need a project manual.

If the circle is not filled in, we will NOT order a manual for you.

Thanks!

Calhoun-Jersey Records Due on September 21

What About Those Records?

Hopefully, many of you are preparing your 4-H records to submit. Talk to your 4-H leader if you have any questions.

Why submit 4-H records?

Record keeping is a basic skill that will benefit you throughout life. Managing a checkbook or finding a solution to a problem requires record keeping skills. Keeping good records will help you to build skills in organizing and goal setting. Even if you do not submit your completed records for judging, you will find them useful for when you need to recall your involvement and experiences on applications for college or work. Looking back over your records will give you a sense of pride in your accomplishments.

Every 4-H member should keep a 4-H record. Ask your
4-H Leader or Judy Benz if you need help in tracking projects and skills you have learned. Your 4-H record is an important document. Keep your record in a notebook or folder that will protect it and keep it neat and clean. Remember where you keep your record, as you will be adding to it on a regular basis.

New Curriculum for 2009-10

4-H Program is a one-step guide for new and returning 4-H members, families, and volunteers. Information is grouped in sections so you can quickly find what you need. Check out the new projects!
Bicycle 1 & 2: Bicycling for Fun, Wheels in Motion, and Helper's Guide.

Veterinary Science: Veterinary Science 1-3—From Airedales to Zebras, All System Go, On the Cutting Edge, and Helper's Guide.
Wind Energy: Power of the Wind and Facilitators Guide.

Club Officer Responsibilities

With the new 4-H year in full swing, most clubs will be electing new officers. Holding a club office is quite a challenge. Club officers have a responsibility to its entire club and members.

President

Consult with the leaders ahead of time to prepare for each meeting. Notify the leader and vice-president several days before the meeting if you are going to be absent. Conduct meetings according to parliamentary procedure and in a courteous, respectful, and tactful manner. Help others carry out their assignments. Avoid dominating the meeting and encourage everyone to participate in the meeting. Represent your group proudly at meetings and events.

Vice-President

Conduct meetings and represent your club in the absence of the president. Chair the Program Committee, introduce the program participants, and thank the people who present the program.

Secretary

Record the minutes and attendance at each meeting. Accurate records of motions made and who made them is necessary for the minutes. The secretary keeps
records of talks, demonstrations and business
conducted.

Treasurer

Pay bills and deposit money promptly, keep accurate records in treasurers book, report at each meeting how much money the club has, and complete a final summary at the end of the 4-H year to be audited.

Reporter

Write articles about the club meetings and activities and send them to the newspapers as soon as possible. He/She should write articles of reports of community service projects the club is involved in before and after they happen and send to newspaper/radio for publicity.

Historian

Create a scrapbook of pictures of club activities and articles that have been published in newspapers or newsletters concerning club meetings and events. He/she may also be appointed the official photographer for the club.

Program Fee for 2009-10

Calhoun-Jersey 4-H clubs offer a wide variety of fun activities that promote positive youth development. Various workshops are offered to area youth each year via the 4-H program.

Unfortunately, shrinking contributions from the Federal government and a stressed State budget have created a series of fiscal issues for U of I Extension.

The strain has led the University to make a significant change in how local offices approach the 4-H program resulting in a program fee effective Sept. 1, 2009. Beginning with enrollment of 4-H members in September 2009, the state 4-H office will be implementing a $20 per year 4-H Program Fee. $6 of that fee will be forwarded to the State 4-H Program to help 4-H support costs.

Calhoun-Jersey Unit will be implementing these changes:

1. $50 cap on families with 3 or more family members enrolled this fall.

2. Cloverbuds, or members ages 5-7 years of age before September 1 will not be expected to pay.

3. Workshops and clinics will be free of charge.

No individual will be denied participation in 4-H due to inability to pay. Clubs may also choose to sponsor the fee for members through fundraising efforts.

Please contact this office before your club undertakes any kind of fundraising effort.

Please call either Extension Office if you have any questions.
