In July, 1999, University of Illinois Extension launched a new, high-tech system for diagnosing plant disease, weed and insect problems and identification for homeowners and farmers. The Bureau County Extension office was one of 12 pilot sites tested in Illinois. Currently this digital-imaging, web-based system is being used in University of Illinois Extension offices statewide.
Extension educators and unit-based Extension staff have received extensive training on using digital cameras, microscopes and computer systems. With this new system problems can be diagnosed with an accurate, timely response. Timely response to many insect and disease problems can prevent yield reductions in an agricultural setting where a crop loss could be disastrous. A speedy and accurate diagnosis of a plant problem can make the difference between effective and ineffective control. Most samples submitted receive a diagnosis within 24 to 48 hours. Currently, there is no cost to clients for this service. In some cases, samples may need to be submitted to the University of Illinois Plant Clinic on the Urbana-Champaign campus for further diagnosis. There is a small fee for this service.
The process: Bring a sample of the plant/tree, crop or insect into the Extension office. Samples must be in good condition in order to receive an accurate diagnosis. Background information relevant to the problem is essential to an accurate diagnosis. Digital photos as well as microscopic images are taken of the sample. The images are uploaded to the Distance Diagnostics Through Digital Imaging site where trained University of Illinois Extension educators analyze the submissions. Written diagnosis and recommendations are provided through the local Extension site. Please call University of Illinois Extension - Bureau County at 815/875-2878.
