This three-day event is the culmination of all the 4-H youth's hard work and efforts on the projects they have chosen to participate in during the year. Conference style judging is used at the Bureau County 4-H Fair. 4-H members bring their projects before the judge for judging. The youth and the judge discuss the project together. The youth may answer such questions as where they got the idea for the project, what was the hardest part of the project, what they enjoyed about the project, what they learned about the project and what they might do differently.
At the conclusion of judging, exhibitors receive their rating. Each exhibitor receives either a blue, red, or white ribbon. In addition, projects may earn a Superior ribbon or a Best Junior Exhibitor ribbon (for those not 10 yrs. old as of September 1). Projects may also receive a special honor, that of a State Fair or a State Fair Alternate ribbon. Those 4-Hers that receive this honor may then take their project to the Illinois State Fair held in August. Livestock exhibitors may receive a Grand Champion, Champion, Reserve Grand Champion or Reserve Champion ribbon.
As an extra bonus, various trophies, plaques, and monetary awards are given to outstanding projects in many different areas. Businesses and individuals throughout the county sponsor these awards. During the Awards Night Program, held the last evening of the 4-H Fair, the youth receive their awards.
Also held the last evening of the Fair is the Annual 4-H Sale of Champions. The Champion and Reserve Champion of the following market divisions - beef, swine, sheep, goats, waterfowl, rabbits, and poultry will be offered for sale at the auction. Owners of the respective champions, 4-H youth, will have the option of auctioning their animals. At the discretion of the youth and the winning bidder, the auctioned off animal may then be returned to the youth owner for completion of the show season, returned to the youth, or may be taken possession of immediately after the auction by the highest bidder. Individuals and businesses are welcome to attend the sale to bid on these livestock champions or they may make contributions to help support this sale. Supporting businesses and individuals will be recognized at the 4-H Sale of Champions.
The Bureau County 4-H Fair is open to the public; there is no cost to attend. Families and individuals are welcome and encouraged to come and visit the exhibit buildings and livestock barns. Stay and watch the judging events, Public Speaking Contest, Cat Show, Dog Show, and Fashion Revue. All ages are able to find something that will catch their interest.
