University of Illinois Extension Has Moisture Meters to Loan

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 16, 2008

The University of Illinois Extension Office in Adams County has a limited number of moisture meters to loan to home and business owners as they rebuild following the recent flooding.

"It is extremely important that wood framing be dry before new drywall or sheetrock is installed," said U of I Extension County Director, Carrie Edgar in announcing the availability of the devices. "Otherwise mold can develop behind walls, possibly leading to health problems."

The easy to use moisture meters can be used to determine when the moisture content of the framing or other building materials has been reduced to 15%, the level considered safe for construction to take place. It can take six weeks or longer after the water recedes before the wood is dry enough to proceed. Drying time can be reduced by improving air circulation through the use of fans once any damaged electrical service has been determined to be safe to use.

The meters can be checked out for up to 5 days from the Extension office with a $50 deposit. The deposit will be returned when the meter is returned. For information on borrowing one of the meters, contact the Extension office in Adams County at 217-223-8380.
