Over the years, marketing has been a challenge for managers of all types of businesses. During the Industrial Age, marketing theory was based on the traditional 4Ps: Product, Price, Place and Promotion. This approach was relevant and appropriate from the 50s to the 60s when product shortages occurred and the focus was on supply more than demand. Today's marketplace has moved from mass production and mass consumption to an interactive service economy, globally connected and customer driven–where time and speed are of the essence. Today's customers access product and service information according to their needs and wants. The key is for everyone in a business to be involved in marketing and to understand how its many parts can be brought together into a coherent and effective marketing plan. A marketing plan is based on marketing goals and strategies which align with the overall business mission, goals and strategies determined by both internal and external analysis. In other words, a marketing plan fulfills a company's marketing strategy that meets the needs of target customers.
