Objective of the CourseAn in-depth examination of the emerging science in pig biology and the application of these new technologies in state-of-the-art production system
The course is designed for swine specialists from commercial operations and those specialists who direct or provide technical support for swine research and Extension programs. All attendees should have a strong background in both animal science and swine production systems.
This intensive course will concentrate on the scientific basis of modern swine production technology. Effective integration of new informational technology into production systems is a major challenge for decision-makers and swine specialists who advise producers. This course will be an in-depth examination of the emerging science in pig biology and the application of this science in state-of-the-art production systems. The instructors for this course are recognized, international experts in their field. Coordinators for the course are Professors Gilbert Hollis, Michael Ellis and José "Pepe" Cuaron. This course is based on lectures, supplemented by group discussions and activities. There will be some evening sessions, and all day instruction on Saturday. Instructors will be available for limited one-on-one consultation.
Details of the course are as follows:
Participants will receive a thorough review of current knowledge in all swine production disciplines. Copies of lecture materials will be provided. The course provides an unique opportunity for expanding personal contacts with senior swine professionals from around the world.
A special room rate has been negotiated with the Hawthorn Suites, 101 Trade Centre Drive, Champaign, IL 61820 (217-398-3400) to house all short course participants. Rooms have either king size bed or two regular beds (double). Participants have the option of sharing a room with another participant or staying alone. The cost of the room is $90 (US) for king or $90 double (includes full buffet breakfast). Daily transportation to the course site will be provided. You must make your own reservations.
Registration fee: $3,000. If 3 to 6 people from the same company or pork producer organization attend, the registration fee is $2,700 per person, 7-10 people from the same company or pork producer organization, the registration fee is $2,400 per person. This fee does not include hotel costs. All lunches and dinners are included in the fee.
The fees for this course should be remitted in the form of a U.S. dollar check, payable to the University of Illinois or register on line using a credit card.

To be accepted into the Advanced Swine Production Technology short course, a completed application form (see below) and payment of course fees (or written financial confirmation from the participant's company or sponsoring organization) by April 10, 2008. Because space is limited, acceptance will be on a "first come, first admission" basis. On receipt of this information, the course coordinator will finalize your housing (you must arrange your own hotel reservations) and arrange to meet your flight and transport you from the airport to your hotel. E-mail messages specifying arrival information should be sent to the attention of the ASPTC coordinator (hollisg@uiuc.edu). Following your acceptance into the course, each participant will be sent additional information.
