Illinois Earns Top Honors at National 4-H Forestry Invitational
Illinois placed first from the 15 states that participated in the 28th annual National 4-H Forestry Invitational from Sunday, July 22, through Thursday, July 26.
The invitational was held at West Virginia University Jackson’s Mill State 4-H Camp and Conference Center near Weston, W.Va. The International Paper Company Foundation, the Association of Natural Resources Extension Professionals, and the Cooperative Extension Service sponsored the event.
The Illinois team is from Will County, and is comprised of 4-H members Chris Francis, Grace (Neno) Muganda, Diana Lyn Burkart and Lesia Knox. Natural Resources Extension Educator Dave Shiley coached the team.
The teams from Tennessee and Georgia placed second and third respectively. Chris Francis received the high point individual award and Grace Neno Mugunda was recognized as the second highest scoring individual. Third place high scoring individual recognition went to Miranda Hunt of Tennessee.
Students compete for overall team and individual awards in several categories. Events included a forestry written exam, tree identification, tree measurement, compass and pacing, insect and disease identification, topographic map use, the Forestry Bowl and forest evaluation.
